Matjaž Žitnik is a scientific chancelor at IJS and professor at FMF UL where he teaches the atomic physics. At IJS, he is a head of the program group for Research of atoms, molecules and structures with photons and particles at the Department of low and medium energy physics.
His main research area is application of electron and photon (coincidence) spectroscopy for studying low density matter (gas of atoms and molecules and clusters) upon excitation by light, either of small (synchrotron) or large intensity (laser, free electron laser). He is interested in finding and evaluating new and rare (multi-particle) modes of excitation and decay of quantum states, in quantum interference of decay paths, in the collective decay dynamics of low density matter and in the reverse effect of such matter ”in movement” on light emission, focusing on the short wavelength range.
