Quantum Computers and Other Prospects of the Second Quantum Revolution: SQUASH Advisors on Intelekta

Jan 8, 2025 | Event

On January 7, 2025, several advisors from the SQUASH project appeared on the Intelekta radio program titled Quantum Computers and Other Prospects of the Second Quantum Revolution. The guests included Prof. Dr. Dragan Mihailović, advisor in the SQUASH areas Hybrid Quantum Devices and Quantum Calculations and Simulations, Dr. Zala Lenarčič and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lev Vidmar, advisors in Quantum Many-Body Physics, and Prof. Dr. Anton Ramšak, a contributor to the SQUASH project.

The discussion focused on key aspects of what is commonly referred to as the second quantum revolution. Particular attention was given to the potential of quantum computers, which promise to tackle problems that are intractable for even the most powerful classical supercomputers. The speakers highlighted how quantum technologies will enable deeper insight into phenomena at the molecular and atomic level—developments that are expected to drive progress in diverse scientific and technological fields, from novel medical drug discovery to advanced materials design.

This marks a new wave in quantum science, often termed the second quantum revolution, following the first—namely the development of quantum mechanics a century ago—which still underpins many modern technologies.

The guests emphasized that a significant amount of quantum research is already underway in Slovenia. In the coming years, the SQUASH project will further strengthen its efforts across four central areas of quantum physics: quantum theory, quantum materials, quantum technology, and quantum computing and information.

The full recording of the program (in Slovenian) is available at this link.

We also invite you to explore other events taking place as part of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025), in which many SQUASH advisors are actively involved.
